                 nomination of col. william j. shondel

  Mr. BYRD. Mr. President, I am pleased that the President has 
nominated Colonel William J. Shondel for the rank of Brigadier General. 
Colonel Shondel, a native of Clinton, Ohio, earned undergraduate and 
graduate degrees from Ohio State University, and also earned a master's 
degree from Marshall University.
  Colonel Shondel currently serves as the Assistant Adjutant General 
for Air, West Virginia Air National Guard. Prior to this he held many 
demanding positions, including Director of Logistics for the West 
Virginia Air National Guard, overseeing all maintenance, supply, 
transportation and logistics support for two C-130 airlift groups.
  Before joining the Air National Guard, Colonel Shondel had a 
distinguished career in the U.S. Air Force where he was named the Air 
Force Outstanding Supply Officer of the year and his unit was rated the 
best in the nation for three consecutive years.
  Colonel Shondel is a distinguished Reserve Officer Training Corps 
graduate, as well as a graduate of Squadron Officers School, Air 
Command and Staff College, and Air War College. His major decorations 
include the Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, 
Air Force Achievement Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, and the 
National Defense Service Medal.
  Mr. President, I am pleased to cast my vote for the confirmation of 
Col. William J. Shondel as Brigadier General, and I urge my colleagues 
to support this nomination.
